In
my microteaching I use Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Communicative
Language Teaching (CLT) is a method or an approach to teach a language in term
of communication.
CLT
considered a range of principles which encompassed the goals of language
teaching, the way learners learn a language, the kinds of classroom activities
that best facilitate learning, and the role of teachers and learners in the
classroom. (Paulista and Gómez: 2014)
However,
not only Wilkins’ studies influenced the design of communicative language
syllabus and textbooks in Europe, but also the writings of other applied
linguists such as Widdowson, Candlin, Christopher Brumfit, Keith Johnson (cited
in Richards&Rodgers, 2001:154) , among others, were taken heed of. As
specialists’ contributions are considerable, it has been selected only some of
them to draw an overview of the main characteristics of Communicative
approaches in language teaching. Hence, Halliday proposed a theory according to
Communicative Language Teaching principles and it was focused on the functions
of language. He defined seven basic functions that are developed when children
learn their native language and they are mentioned below:
1. The
instrumental function: using language to get things.
2. The
regulatory function: using language to control the behaviour of others.
3. The
international function: using languages to create interaction with others.
4. The
personal function: using language to express personal feelings and
meanings.
5. The
heuristic function: using language to learn and to discover.
6. The
imaginative function: using language to create a world of imagination.
7. The
representational function: using language to communicate information.
(as cited in Paulista and Gómez: 2014)
The
goal of this method is to unable students to communicate in the target
language. To do this students need knowledge of the linguistic form, meanings,
and function. Communication is a process; knowledge of the forms of language is
insufficient. The teacher facilitates communication in the classroom. In this
role, one of his major responsibilities is to establish situation likely to
promore communication (Larsen: 2000).
Canale
and Swain (1980) described the communicative competence through four dimensions
which gathered importance in the Communicative Language Teaching approach.
These areas were defined as follows:
·
Grammatical competence: it consists in the
ability to use grammar rules and lexicon to produce and understand a message.
·
Sociolinguistic competence: it refers to
the ability to use language depending on the social context, which involves
time, place and social relationship.
·
Discourse competence: it means the ability
to connect a number of ideas together appropriately in order to interpret and
to exchange messages.
·
Strategic competence: it lies in the
ability for learners to use strategies in communication when there is a lack of
vocabulary and structures. The objective while using these strategies is to
understand meanings and to be understood.
(as cited in
Paulista and Gómez: 2014)
REFLECTION
On Mid Term Test in subject Approaches and Methods in
TESOL, the students must perform microteaching with CLT or TPR method in front
of the class within around seven minutes. Mr Rohani said that the student
freely brought any media for microteaching. We recorded our microteaching
activity and then uploaded through website. I seriously start my performance of
microteaching. I began my microteaching with giving brief introduction of simple
present tense using adverb of time (day and time). Then I gave my students an
information gap and asked to practice CLT with information gap as medium. My
medium is shown below :
You
need to ask your partner what subject that he/ she has at your free time.
You
can ask your partner randomly.
How
to ask:
What
subject do you have on ..... (day) at ...... (time)
How
to answer:
I
have ...... (subject) class on ...... (day) at ...... (time)
Schedule
of Subject in School

The
objectives of the lesson are:
1)
Identify
the uses of day and times in simple present tense.
2)
Identify
the verbs related to asking information of school schedule.
3)
Arrange
the sentences that contains with day and time in simple present tense.
4)
Pronounce
the verbs related to asking information of school schedule correctly
My weakness :
·
Classroom language is important. Suddenly, I forgot
how to end the class.
·
I cannot control my nervousness.
·
I easily forget about something when I am in front of
the class.
My strength :
·
I used some pictures (media) in information gap.
·
I explained about what the students had to do (giving
instruction).
·
I am creative enough about the plan of the
microteaching.
·
In my script, I do not have grammatical error.
·
I smile everytime while teaching.
CONCLUSION
The Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is an approach
that emphasizes the communication skill of students. When applying this
approach or method I have to consider about:
Ø My knowledge
about the target language. This is the important thing before I teach my
students, therefore I study in UNNES in English Department to enrich my
knowledge about language and become a teacher.
Ø The readiness
about the material, objectives, and media. The teacher must know what material
that suitable for CLT method. Not all of the material can be applied in CLT.
Ø The objective of
CLT is students’s
communication skill.
Ø I need to
prepare my media and make it attractive for my students. So, my students can
follow the learning activities enthusiastically.
According
to my reflection and my opinion, the preparation is important for teacher. The
teacher really cleaver and smart in material, however the teacher need public
speaking skill to deliver it to his/her student. What must I do to develop my
skill of teaching are:
1. I need more “jam
terbang” in teaching English.
2. I must keep
practicing about how to deliver my material to my student.
3. I need more confidence
on myself.
4. I must learn
many type of learning method.
